Brewing up a plan

Two Black Country traditions - brewing and metal polishing - have been brought together in a winning formula for Wolverhampton-based Brewery Equipment Refurbishments Ltd. Established in January 2001 by co-directors Charanjit Singh and Tony Moore, the skills that each of them possessed from their former companies proved to serve a niche market - brewery counter display refurbishment.

Charanjit explains, "I had previously run my own metal polishing firm and Tony had extensive knowledge of the brewery industry having previously worked in the brewery equipment refurbishment field. With our contacts and knowledge we saw an opportunity in the market and decided to get together to set up our own company. We were able to offer an end-to-end service with almost every stage handled in-house. This has been a big bonus over the competition and means we can control our quality standards much more closely."

The company 'remanufactures' counter display units for the Brewery Industry, taking them from all the major and independent breweries across the UK. The counter mounts, bearing familiar logos and emblems, are brought into the factory in various stages of distress. Here they are stripped down to there basic component parts, re-powdercoated, plated and polished, all electrical parts are also updated or replaced before being reassembled.

The process results in 'as new' counter mounts, representing up to 50% in cost savings compared to new replacements. This win-win situation has been positive all round and the company has seen impressive growth. Its staff has increased from four to 18 and turnover looks set to hit three quarters of a million pounds this year.

In order to realise its growth potential, the company has focused on managing its cash flow. It has also looked to alternative sources for funding various projects to move it forward. One such area was achieving ISO 9001:2000 accreditation.

A key differentiator for Brewery Equipment Refurbishments is its quality of product and service. Although it had excellent quality processes in place, one of its major customers made ISO 9001:2000 a provision of its approved supplier status. This made it imperative for the company to achieve recognition.

Tony comments, "We looked on the process of achieving accreditation as a key project in terms of time and investment. We took the decision to consult Business Link on the best way to approach it. We were put in touch with John Adams at AQUAS Consultants who was soon working with us to address all the issues. This was subsidised by Business Link, so our investment of both time and money have been kept to a minimum allowing us to concentrate on growing the business.

Having achieved the standard in April adds to our credibility and from December 2003, those companies with ISO 9002 will need to be reassessed against ISO 9001:2000. This means we are already ahead of the game. In a restricted market where there are other major suppliers having advantages of this type can be key to our future success."

The company is set to build on the solid foundations established over the last two years. It is addressing other issues such as health and safety and IT along with potential future diversification to ensure it keeps up its winning formula.
